What to Expect at a Prometric Testing Center for the PMHNP Exam

Knowing what to expect on exam day is one of the easiest ways to reduce unnecessary stress. The ANCC and AANP PMHNP exams are both administered through Prometric testing centers, and the experience is fairly consistent across locations. Here is a straightforward rundown of what to expect so there are no surprises.

Before You Go

If at all possible, visit your testing center the day before your exam. Knowing where to park, where the entrance is, and what the building looks like removes a small but real source of stress on exam morning. You want your mental energy going toward questions, not logistics.

Also, you will need two forms of ID. Your primary ID must be government-issued with a photo and your signature—a driver's license or passport both work. Your secondary ID just needs to have your name and signature pre-printed on it, so a credit card or bank card is fine. Make sure the name on both IDs exactly matches the name on your Authorization to Test letter. A small mismatch can cause problems at check-in, so double check this before exam day.

What Happens When You Arrive

Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. When you check in, you will be asked to provide your identification and complete a brief intake process.

Before entering the testing room, you will leave your phone and all personal belongings in a secure locker. You will not have access to them during the exam, so make sure anything you might need, like a snack or water, is easily retrievable during your break if your center permits one.

What the Testing Center Provides

At my center, I was given:

  • Two dry-erase sheets

  • Two dry-erase markers

  • Orange foam earplugs

  • Noise-canceling headphones

The headphones blocked sound well but were tight and uncomfortable after a while. I would recommend bringing your own earplugs just in case your center does not supply them or the ones they provide are not working for you.

The Testing Software

The software itself is straightforward and there is a short tutorial before your exam begins. During the exam you can:

  • Highlight text within questions

  • Strike through answer choices you have eliminated

  • Flag questions to revisit later

These tools are worth using. Striking through eliminated answers and flagging genuinely uncertain questions can help you move through the exam with more confidence and less second-guessing.

When You Get Your Results

At the end of the exam, the screen will indicate that you will receive your results by email within approximately one hour. My passing email was already waiting when I got back to my car.

You will not get a detailed score breakdown, but you will know whether you passed.
